19-year-old in custody for road rage shooting on I-696 in Royal Oak

(WWJ) Westbound I-696 has reopened in Oakland County, after troopers investigated what police say was a road rage shooting involving two teens.

According to Michigan State Police, the back window of a tow truck was shattered by gunfire just after 2:30 p.m.. Friday, along westbound I-696 in Royal Oak.

State Police said further investigation revealed the suspect cut off the tow truck and the two began "road raging." The tow truck driver got out of the car and started screaming at the suspect, according to State Police.

The passenger in the backseat of the car handed the suspect a BB gun and told him to fire at the tow truck. All witnesses in the suspect's car gave a similar statement.

Investigators interviewed a Sterling Heights man, 19, and his girlfriend, 16. The suspect is in custody at the Oakland County Jail. Prosecutors will review possible charges against him.

The weapon was recovered at the home of the suspects' friend's parents.

There were no injuries reported.

Around 7 p.m., State Police reopened all westbound lanes of I-696 at Bermuda/Mohawk.
