YPSILANTI (WWJ) -- Police in Washtenaw County are looking for a suspect accused of firing shots that struck a school bus with children on board.

According to the Ypsilanti Community Schools, a school bus was hit by gunfire Monday afternoon, while students were being dropped off at their designated stops.

In a letter sent to students' families, Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross said the bus driver and monitor acted immediately, enacting the district’s safety protocols and ensuring that no one had been injured.

"Once the driver confirmed that every student was safe, they contacted the Transportation Director, who immediately contacted the police and the Superintendent," Zachery-Ross said. "At this time, we do not have all the incident details of this investigation. However, we are working closely
with law enforcement officials to investigate and ensure the safety and security of all our students at YCS."

There was no immediate information from police about any suspects, as the investigation continues.

"Our primary concern is always the safety of the children entrusted to our care," Zachery-Ross added, in the letter. "We have taken immediate
measures to ensure all students are safe and secure. We take this matter very seriously and will continue collaborating with law enforcement authorities to ensure the safety and security of all our students."

It's unclear if the bus was intentionally targeted by the shooter.

The district said parents would be updated as there are developments in the case.
