DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police said the suspected shooter responsible for injuring two people Wednesday morning died after one of the victims acted in self-defense.
Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis said the triple shooting took place at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, in the 300 block of River Place in the Rivertown District when the gunman started firing a long gun.
The suspect took aim at a man and a woman as they walked near the Rattlesnake Club, in the area of Joseph Campau and Atwater Street, and open fired.
McGuinnis called the attack "unprovoked."
In response, one of the victims was able to fire back and killed the suspect, McGuinnis said.
When Detroit police arrived on the scene, they found the body of the alleged gunman on the street with multiple gunshot wounds. Officials said earlier they believed he was in his 30s.
“We interviewed the mom [of the suspected gunman] and she is heartbroken,” McGuinnis said. “We do know that the deceased suffered from clinically diagnosed mental illness and we believe that had a significant factor in these circumstances.”
The couple involved in the incident has been hospitalized for treatment of their injuries -- they are expected to be OK.
McGuinnis said the department is continuing to investigate -- no other information was released.
