DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities denounced the "senseless" shooting that took the life of a young teen standing on his front porch on the city's west side Tuesday evening.
"Sadly, we have a young person once again in our city that's been shot senselessly on the street in the middle of summer and there's just no words," Chief White said at a press conference near the scene of the shooting on the 8100 block of Mullane Street near Homer.
White said the child, aged between 14 and 15-years-old, was shot once while standing outside his home around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers from the 4th Precinct and Special Operations responded within minutes, White said.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.
White said four suspects were taken into custody -- at this time the department is confident they are the perpetrators connected to the shooting.
"This is senseless gun violence in our community and in our country -- it's over the top," White said. "Everyone's got a gun and everyone wants to use it. Now we've got another dead child."
While an investigation is still underway, the chief confirmed the suspects in custody were all under the age of 20, with two of the suspected shooters in their teens.
White said there were multiple shots fired, but the victim was only hit once as far as he knows.
"There's no comforting words you can keep making when people are committing senseless violence in our community," White added.
White said the cause of the shooting in unknown at the time, but detectives are still working the investigation.
