DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit man has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder after a man's body was found on the Southfield Freeway in Detroit last week.
Rayquin Desean Patrick, 22, was arraigned Tuesday in connection with the death of 22-year-old John Williams, Michigan State Police announced. Patrick was also charged with felony firearm. He’s being held at the Wayne County Jail.
Police found a young man shot to death on the ramp from northbound M-39 to I-96 around 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. MSP later identified the victim as Williams, who had reportedly moved back home and was working as a chef in Detroit.
While investigators identified Patrick as a suspect in the case, officials haven’t disclosed a possible motive in the case.
“This was excellent police work by our detectives. They were able to develop a suspect and get him off our streets,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said. “We will continue to vigorously investigate these crimes on our freeways and seek prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”
Investigators were working last week to determine when and where exactly Williams was shot, as they weren’t sure if he had been killed on the freeway. Authorities didn’t immediately say in Tuesday’s update whether they had determined where the crime took place.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help cover funeral costs for the family.
