SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WWJ) – A man is in custody after allegedly stealing a police car and resisting arrest on Saturday.

It all unfolded around 4:30 p.m. when an officer spotted a stolen vehicle in the area of 12 Mile and Telegraph Roads, Southfield police said.

The officer turned on his lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, only to have the suspect speed away, heading east on 12 Mile toward Lahser Road.

The officer used a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit in the area of Winchester Street and Lahser.

The driver of the stolen vehicle got out and began to flee on foot. When the officer got out to give chase, police say the suspect jumped into the driver’s seat of the patrol car and headed east on Winchester.

A second patrol car in the area was able to bring the suspect to a stop on Winchester, west of Evergreen Road.

While the suspect physically resisted arrest, he was eventually taken into custody, police said.

Both the suspect and officer were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Authorities have not released any information about the suspect.
