KOYLTON TWP. (WWJ) -- A 54-year-old man was shot and killed by Michigan State Police during a confrontation outside a home in the Thumb area.
At around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Michigan State Police said personnel from from the MSP Caro Post responded to a home in Tuscola County's in Koylton Township to pick up a man on a "mental order" that was signed by a judge.
MSP said a preliminary investigation found that troopers and a sergeant arrived on scene, on Denhoff Road, and encountered the man in a vehicle.
During the encounter the man produced a weapon and shots were fired, MSP said.
The 54-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The sergeant was shot in the hand, treated at local hospital and released.
The Michigan State Police (MSP) Investigative Response Team and MSP Crime Lab responded to investigate and process the scene.
Police said the investigation was ongoing on Wednesday.
