WHITEFORD TWP. (WWJ) -- Investigators believe speed and alcohol were both a factor in a weekend crash near the Michigan-Ohio border that has left a driver hospitalized in critical condition.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 31-year-old Cary Jaques of Toledo, Ohio, lost control of his Chevy Cavalier while driving westbound on Section Road, west of Whiteford Road, in Whiteford Township, at 8:45 pm. Sunday.

Officials said the car spun around, and went off the side of the road, hit a culvert (drain pipe) and a tree, and then spun a second time.

Jaques, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the westbound roadway. The car came to rest partially in the eastbound lane and shoulder of the roadway, according to the sheriff's office report.

Jaques was taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital for treatment of critical injuries, officials said. No other injuries were reported.

The Whiteford Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene. An investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed this crash, or who has any information that could help investigators, is asked to call the sheriff's office at 734-240-7756. Or, to remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (1-800-773-2587). Tips may also be submitted online at this link.
