ROMULUS, Mich. (WWJ) - Two vehicles crashed headfirst late Friday night, leaving both drivers dead after troopers scoured I-275 in search of a wrong way driver.

The Michigan State Police was first notified late last night of a wrong way driver headed north on the southbound lanes of I-275 near S. Huron River Dr. in Romulus.

Troopers, with assistance from the Romulus Police Department, were searching for the driver just before midnight when dispatch began taking calls about a straight on collision.

Both drivers -- the only occupants in either vehicle -- were declared dead on the scene by authorities.

Police said next of kin have been notified, but the names of the drivers have not been released.

MSP said in a tweet that troopers and crash investigators are launching an investigation and more details will be released as evidence is collected.
