(WWJ) It's a mess, Friday afternoon, for drivers along a stretch of U.S. 23 in Monroe County that's shut down for emergency repairs.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) said it closed US-23 just north of Cone Road — between Dundee and Milan — to work on a railroad bridge that was hit by a high-load vehicle in August, causing extension damage to the structure.
MDOT said northbound US-23 at M-50 and southbound US-23 at Plank Road will remain closed to traffic until repairs can be made to the bridge.
"This closure and detour is necessary to provide the safest work area possible for crews and motorists," MDOT said, in a release.
Michigan State Police said the repairs are expected to take "a couple of weeks," and MDOT said more information about the length of the closure will be shared once is is determined.
MSP troopers are on scene helping to direct traffic.
Meanwhile, motorists must seek alternate routes. Long-distance travelers can use Telegraph Rd. or I-75.
