Wayne man charged with stabbing Dearborn man to death with kitchen knife, stealing car

DEARBORN (WWJ) -- A 31-year-old man is jailed on a premeditated murder charge after it's alleged that he fatally stabbed a 78-year-old man in Dearborn.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday announced the case against 31-year-old Michael Steven Hicks of Wayne in connection with the slaying last week.

According to investigators, Hicks stabbed Daniel Willard Sweeney of Dearborn. multiple times with a large kitchen knife the evening of Friday, Feb. 11, before stealing his car.

Dearborn Police offers responding to a 911 call, just before 9 p.m., in the 7510 block of Indiana, near Wyoming and Warren, found Hicks outside a home "disheveled, underdressed and without shoes" in frigid weather.

After speaking with Hicks, they went to a home just down the street to conduction a welfare check on a homeowner, later identified as Sweeney.

Police went inside the house to find it has been ransacked, and on the living room floor was Sweeney covered with a blanket.

The victim was taken to a local hospital were he was prounuced dead.

Sweeney's car was later found at another location.

Hicks was arrested and charged with one count each of first degree murder and felony murder. He was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in 19th District Court and was remanded to jail without bond.

It's unclear how the victim and the suspect knew each other, or why Sweeney may have been targeted. No further details were released.

Hicks will be back in court for a probable cause conference on Feb. 28, followed by a preliminary exam on March 4.
