SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) — A 73-year-old woman has died after a fire ripped through a Southfield condominium complex on Monday.
Authorities said the victim was found after the flames at the Le Chateau Condominiums were put out in the evening hours of Nov. 4.
Four more people were hurt, including one resident who had to be hospitalized, officials said.
The fire broke out around 2:15 p.m. at the condos located just off Southfield Road, north of 10 Mile Road.
Southfield Fire Chief Johnny Menifee told WWJ Newsradio 950's Darrylin Horne that 32 units were damaged by the fire. Investigators believe the unit where the fire started did not have a smoke detector.
MDOT traffic cameras and video posted to social media showed thick black smoke billowing from the building. It could be seen well over a mile away.
While the fire has been contained, investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
Southfield Road was closed for a time between 10 Mile and 11 Mile, with drivers being told to avoid the area.
The Salvation Army and Red Cross are helping those who lost their homes with food and shelter arrangements.
