MONROE COUNTY (WWJ) - One woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was Life Flighted to a local hospital after smashing head-on with another vehicle on I-75 early Saturday morning.

Michigan State Police said the crash occurred around 12:44 a.m. Saturday when a red Dodge Caravan was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-75 near Ready Road.

The Dodge Caravan crashed head-on into a black Cadillac SUV which was heading south on the freeway.

Authorities said the driver of the Cadillac, a 26-year-old male, sustained serious injuries and was taken by an ambulance to a Beaumont Trenton Hospital.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan — a 37-year-old woman — was trapped in the wreckage for several hours as troopers worked to free her. She was finally extracted from her vehicle with the help of firefighters from Berlin Township.

The woman was said to have life-threatening injuries and had to be airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital for emergency care.

MSP closed the I-75 Freeway in both directions for six hours while emergency crews worked to free the woman and then to investigate the scene.

The Dundee Police Department deployed a drone to make sure no other passengers were possibly ejected and confirmed that the two drivers involved in the crash were the only occupants in either vehicle.

Emergency response to the collision required a collaborative effort; MSP said they received assistance from the Dundee Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Berlin Township Fire Department and the Monroe County Ambulance.

The investigation remains ongoing. MSP is taking information about the crash and have asked anyone who knows about the incident to please contact Trooper Anthony Nyberg of the Monroe Post at 734-242-3500.
