Ed Orgeron on SportsTalk: Inside LSU's QB shuffle with a 'little Johnny Manziel,' more

Ed Orgeron wouldn't disclose the circumstances surrounding Myles Brennan's injury, but he said the "freak accident" had occurred in the prior 48 hours.

The LSU coach spoke to the injury to Brennan in an interview on SportsTalk with Bobby Hebert, Kristian Garic and Mike Detillier.

“It was a freak accident," Orgeron said. "I don’t want to disclose anything. I still want to to talk to the family. But he did get operated this morning. Everything went well. You know Myles put himself — he was fighting for a starting position. He had a great spring, had a great summer, just an unfortunate freak accident. That’s all.”

The news erased any mystery in the race to be LSU's starting quarterback, with Max Johnson now in line for the job. He had been battling Brennan for that right this offseason.

While unfortunate, the clarity of the QB situation does allow the team to get Johnson a larger share of 1st-team reps and start working to tailor their offense to his strengths. Johnson is a left-handed quarterback with above-average mobility.

“In the long run what’s going to happen," Orgeron said, "it helps us now that we know our starting quarterback.”

A potential return timetable for Brennan is still unknown, but his injury will also elevate freshman Garrett Nussmeier into the backup role. Orgeron had high praise for the young quarterback, the son of current Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Doug Nussmeier. Johnson's father is Super Bowl winning quarterback Brad Johnson.

“[Nussmeier] likes to make plays. He’s like a little Johnny Manziel right there," Orgeron said. "This guy’s going to be a phenomenal football player. But he needs to learn how to take care of the ball just like he did in spring practice. But now the expectation is going to be a little bit higher. He’s a second-string guy. This guy is going to answer the bell. I believe in him.”

MORE FROM ED ORGERON

DEREK STINGLEY WILL GET REPS AT WR

"Here’s the deal ... with Derek and his daddy. We had a great relationship, he says ‘coach, you gotta promise me two years.’ Everybody was fighting for Derek here, offense and defense. … Everybody wanted him to play both ways. I asked his dad, he says ‘coach, you’ve got to promise me he plays cornerback for two years.” I asked Derek the other day, he said ‘coach, it’s up to you.’ I asked his dad, he said ‘it’s up to you.’

"So we’re going to put him in on offense in fall camp, see if we can use him, see if we need him, obviously, and then see how it works out. If we can get it done, we might give him five or 10 plays a game.”

TWO TRANSFER STARTERS?

ON MIKE JONES (transfer from Clemson)

“Mike Jones comes in here, and I asked the players the other day, they said ‘coach it seems like Mike has been here for four years.’ He’s adapted very well. He’s a great kid."

ON MAJOR BURNS (transfer from Georgia)

“He’s immediately ready to play. … Watch him, he is gonna be pushing for a starting position sometime during the season.
