LSU was set for a quarterback competition for its starting job, but the air was sucked from that balloon with the news Myles Brennan had suffered a "severe" injury to him left arm that requires surgery.
Brennan underwent that surgery Tuesday morning, Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said on ESPN 104.5's Off The Bench, confirming that Max Johnson would be the starter and freshman Garrett Nussmeier the backup.
“Well obviously Max is going to be our starter," Orgeron said. "You know he’s got to have a great camp. The depth chart is etched in sand. He knows he’s gotta perform, but I believe in Max just like I believe in Myles, and I think we’ve got us a great quarterback, a great championship quarterback. Garret’s gonna have to step up. Garrett’s a very talented young man, I’m glad we got him.”
Tune in to SportsTalk on AM-870, FM-105.3 or the Audacy app for a live interview with Orgeron Tuesday evening at 6:10 p.m.
The injury is the latest roadblock in Brennan's career that has been derailed at multiple stages since he arrived at LSU as a highly touted recruit out of Mississippi. Brennan lost quarterback battles in each of his first two seasons to former LSU QBs Danny Etling and Joe Burrow, then played three games as the starter in the 2020 season before suffering a season-ending oblique injury.
Orgeron didn't specify the details surrounding the injury itself, not the timeline for a potential return, but did add that his family had already inquired about those details and when Brennan could potentially get back and finish his career at LSU.
“Very unfortunate. You know, Myles was competing, was fighting to be the starting quarterback at LSU, fought back, had a great spring, had a great summer. [He] had an unfortunate accident. He’s getting operated this morning," Orgeron said, noting that he hadn't yet spoken with Brennan directly. "Our prayers are with Myles and his family … his dad and his mom took it hard, I’m sure Myles took it hard. I didn’t get to talk to him yet, I called him yesterday, but I’m sure he’s very upset. We’re going to follow him all the way through this."
The LSU team is set to report to campus this week, and it will open its 2021 season on Sept. 4 against UCLA.
