Max Johnson says it "stunk" to see Myles Brennan go down with an injury shortly before a much anticipated quarterback competition to be LSU's starter, but he's all business now.
The sophomore is looking to build upon a pair of thrilling wins to close out the season over Florida and Ole Miss.
“We all felt bad for Myles," Johnson said this week. "It stunk for the whole team. He’s a leader on our team. I was just looking forward to competing with him. We push each other and I’m excited to have him back. He’s gonna help us throughout the season.”
When he steps under center in the 2021 season it'll be with a new offensive coordinator in Jake Peetz and passing game coordinator in DJ Mangas, but he doesn't expect things to look significantly different. There'll still be a lot of play-action, boot rollouts and a handful of snaps from under center each week. But the focus will be on getting the ball into the receivers' hands and letting them go to work.
“We’ve got a lot of guys right now, I think," Johnson said. "There's a lot of guys that can go up and get it. We’ve got a lot of slot receivers, a lot of outside guys that can come in and out of their breaks, got great hands and I think just giving them the ball as soon as possible and let them go and make plays. They’re really athletic, they can jump and go get it, and I think just giving them the ball is going to be a big priority for us.”
LSU opens up the 2021 season on the road against UCLA on Sept. 4.
