John Emery's junior season with LSU football isn't quite yet lost, but he'll miss his fourth game to start the season.
Lawyers for Emery's camp had been hopeful to clear up academic issues that have kept him off the field and have the running back in action for the Tigers' SEC opener against Mississippi State, but that has not happened, according to a report from The Advocate. The court asked for additional information, with an eventual decision likely coming early next week..
Emery was expected to be a leader in LSU's backfield this season alongside fellow junior Ty Davis-Price, and drew rave reviews throughout camp. But when the opener against UCLA arrived, he and several other players were a surprise absence.
The issue stems from academic issues dating back to the 2020 season, according to a report from The Advocate. Orgeron shared in the weeks following that his running back had been deemed ineligible for the remainder of the season.
Emery's attorneys had been working toward getting him reinstated, and Emery had been spotted working in practices despite being ineligible, remaining ready to play if and when he was allowed back on the field.
In his absence it's been Ty Davis Price leading a backfield committee with minimal production to show. Freshmen Corey Kiner and Ty Davis-Price have provided the biggest flashes from that group thus far, and all were expected to be worked in against Mississippi State in the Tigers' Southeastern Conference opener.
