LSU's surging pass rush has been a bright spot early in the 2021 season, but that group has now taken a hit of its own.

Defensive end and team leader Andre Anthony is out for the season, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Monday. The New Orleans native was injured during the Tigers' 49-21 victory over Central Michigan.

"It’s sad news, it really is," Orgeron said, "because he’s having a good season."

The impact of that season was spotted early against the Chippewas as Anthony scooped up a fumble forced by Derek Stingley Jr. and sprinted it back for a touchdown.

Orgeron didn't give the details of Anthony's injury, which occurred later in the half, but noted that he'd spoken with the DE earlier in the day. Despite the injury, Anthony is planning to remain with the team the rest of the way.

“Just had a conversation with him," Orgeron said in announcing the news, "and let me say this about Andre Anthony: What an outstanding Tiger. What an outstanding leader.”

Anthony becomes at least the third player not expected to contribute this season. Linebacker Jared Small suffered a season-ending injury of his own in the opener, and running back John Emery Jr. has been announced as academically ineligible.
