New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has a re-election ad that’s running. But, what does it say about her chances at re-election?
WWL spoke with Political Analyst Clancy Dubos about the attraction and high polling numbers LaToya Cantrell currently holds.
"She's the first female mayor and she has an almost unbreakable hold on women voters, especially in the African American community," says Political Analyst Clancy Dubos.
Dubos says although her ad highlights her work to protect New Orleans from COVID, there are other factors…
"She certainly cannot run on crime, or streets, or garbage pickup."
Dubos says the first rule of politics is run on your strengths. And Cantrell's strengths are her high polling numbers.
"She gets really strong numbers whenever the issue is COVID," Dubos says. "Because by all objective measures, she did a very good job of leading the city through that in terms of bringing the numbers down on infections and deaths."
Still, Dubos implies, people are still concerned about the everyday issues the Mayor has yet to address fully or is skirting:
"I think the things people are most concerned about are crime, right now, trash pick up, streets, and her record on COVID."
Dubos says her one strong win is on COVID.
What's lacking as Cantrell hits the airwaves with ads?
Challengers.
"I think that a number of potential candidates have looked at this possibility of running against her and they all decided not to, mostly based on the strength of her poll numbers."
So for now, it's LaToya Cantrell's race to lose.
