New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s re-election campaign will begin its roll out Thursday night with an ad that will air during the NBA Finals, according to NOLA.com. In the spot, Cantrell defends her record of action amid the Covid pandemic, which some have been critical of.

“When we had to make tough calls, we were ahead of the state of Louisiana,” Cantrell says in the advertisement. “And we got blowback, but it was necessary. Leadership is making that decision that’s in the best interest of the people that you serve. It doesn’t mean it’s comfortable every time you do it.”

Cantrell goes on to count the city’s vaccination rate and unemployment help for impacted workers as among her achievements during her first term in office, and she sets her agenda for a second term if elected in the commercial, which is already available to view on YouTube.

“Now is the time for us to remove that wage gap,” Cantrell says. “Now is the time to remove the health disparities that exist within our city.”

It’s unclear whether Cantrell will face any stiff competition in the race. Local business owner Leilani Heno has already built a website focused on her platform.

Meanwhile, another high-profile New Orleans entrepreneur, IV Waste owner Sidney Torres IV, told WWL Radio he does not intend to run for mayor during this election cycle.
