Emotions are running high on both sides of the issue in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a Mississippi law which in turn overturns Roe v. Wade.

Many have voiced their opinions on social media and with the potential for protests in the streets, the New Orleans Police Department is calling for people to have their voices heard in a peaceful way.

“We know that passions are running very high after today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court concerning the issue of abortion,” the NOPD said in a statement released Friday.

“We fully expect gatherings and protests in our city. We encourage all of our citizens to exercise their Constitutional Rights to assemble and make their voices heard. We also fully expect that everyone wishing to do so will be peaceful, non-violent, and respectful of their fellow citizens. Learning from the protests over the murder of George Floyd two summers ago, we have faith that you will set another positive example for the rest of the country.”

Many state and local legislators also shared their opinion from both sides on today’s SCOTUS decision.
