Recall leader: Mail-in campaign working

Cantrell Recall
WWL

The recall effort against New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell is in its home stretch.

Two months remain until the deadline for recall organizers to gain the more than 53,000 signatures they need. One organizer says their mailed petition drive is putting them closer to their goal.

"Overwhelming is an understatement," vice chair Eileen Carter told WWL's Newell Normand when he asked her about the response to the mail-in campaign.

That campaign was launched last month. Carter says she is sure the response to that campaign will give them the more than 53-thousand signatures they need to put the recall effort on the ballot.

"Everybody said what we could not do, and for those type of people, that's just  a little fire to ignite you to say, 'Yes, we can,' and that's what New Orleanians have been showing," Carter said.

Carter is urging residents who have not yet signed the petition to do so sooner rather than later.

"This isn't just something we're doing out of somebody's shed in the back. This is really a process. We have to input these. We have to coordinate. All the sheets have to be numbered. That's why we're telling everyone get these signed now.

"We're doing our due diligence," Carter continued. "Anyone that was flagged did receive a new mailer. We encourage you to sign it and to mail it back. It is free. Postage is paid."

Organizers have until Ash Wednesday, February 22, to gain the signatures needed to put the recall on an upcoming ballot. Carter says the NoLaToya campaign will continue collecting signatures until then.

"Keep them coming, y'all," Carter said. "Keep them coming. This is working. This is happening."
