We're in the midst of the Louisiana gubernatorial campaign, and the candidates have already begun running advertisements attacking each other.
Lately, political action committees associated with frontrunner Jeff Landry have been running negative ads against other Republicans in the race despite Landry's large lead. One analyst says that's not surprising.
"This race was only going to go one way, and that's negative," Jeremy Alford, publisher of LAPolitics.com, said. "Some of what you're seeing are responses from Team Landry to John Schroder and to Stephen Waguespack from some attacks they have made in the direction of Jeff Landry."
Alford says he's not shocked that the PACs backing Landry are running ads targeting Schroder and Waguespack. He says even with a huge lead, Landry and his supporters will fight back when targeted.
"It does not behoove a frontrunner to attack people who are underneath him or her, but when you have someone like Jeff Landry who, politically, is a bulldog, you cannot expect to take a swing at him and for it to go unanswered," Alford said. "Jeff Landry's supporters expect Jeff Landry to fight back and to show his teeth a little bit, and that's exactly what he's doing. I don't think anybody's surprised by that."
That, Alford says, is helping Landry endear himself to his supporters.
"They know he is the chosen candidate of Donald Trump, and they are going to stick with him through thick and thin," Alford said.
Election day is October 14. Early voting starts on September 30th.
