TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Two New Jersey counties accounted for more than half of the positive COVID-19 test results that came back in the state on Sunday, Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday.
At a news briefing on Monday afternoon, Murphy reported 561 new positive COVID-19 test results, 242 of which came out of Ocean County and 54 of which came out of Middlesex County.
Ocean County also saw 28 percent of the approximately 3,660 new COVID-19 cases the state reported over the past six days, health department Commissioner Judy Persichilli said.
"We continue to see the statewide numbers driven in large part… by significant new cases coming out of Ocean County," Murphy said. "We are maintaining our lines of communication with county and community leaders as we work together to mitigate these outbreaks."
The state has increased testing capacity at sites across both counties, and will deploy 20 contact tracers to Ocean County on Tuesday to support local officials' tracing efforts, Persichilli noted.
Murphy on Monday reported one new COVID-19 death, bringing the state's death toll to 14,316. The state is also investigating 1,791 probable COVID-19 deaths.
As of Sunday, 421 people in the state were hospitalized with confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases, 91 of whom were in intensive care and 39 of whom were on ventilators, he said.
