2 dead, 1 injured in Newark shooting

NEWARK (1010 WINS) – A shooting left two people dead and another person injured in Newark on Saturday, police said.

NJ.com reports that gunfire erupted on Mercer Street, near the Arts High School.


One witness said she heard at least eight gunshots shortly before 3 p.m.

Police were investigating on Mercer Street between Martin Luther King Blvd. and Broome Street around 3:45 p.m., according to NJ.com. The crime scene is near Rutgers Newark, Essex County Community College and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The injured victim was taken to an area hospital, but his or her condition wasn't known.

Authorities haven't released a motive or named any suspects.

According to NJ.com, homicides are down 27 percent this year through Sept. 8 and the city could see its lowest murder rate in decades.
