NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Two people were killed when the SUV they were in careened into the Long Island Sound Tuesday afternoon after crashing through a railing.

The vehicle veered from Hudson Park and plunged into the water of Echo Bay around 3 p.m., police said.

The driver, an unidentified man, was removed unconscious from the submerged vehicle by New Rochelle Police divers. He was later pronounced dead at Montefiore Hospital, according to police.

A second person, an unidentified woman, was found dead in the SUV as authorities pulled the vehicle from the water later in the evening.

Police said the murkiness of the water prevented divers from finding her body during the initial recovery.

Sources tell 1010 WINS that not only was there low visibility in the water but that the car was packed with possessions. That led some to suspect the victims were homeless, but the sources say police don't believe that to be the case.
