NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police say two men beat and pepper-sprayed a pair of FDNY EMTs after they refused to send them to different hospital in a taxi. The dispute occurred outside of the Mount Sinai West Hospital on Tenth Avenue and West 59 Street at approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday police say. The Daily News reports that an ambulance took 27-year-old Andre Langston and 24-year-old Avanti Rhodes from the Bronx to the hospital in Midtown where the two men began arguing with the head nurse. They then ran back to the ambulance and demanded they be taken to another hospital the report adds. When the crew refused to do so, police say Rhodes punched one of the EMTs, leaving him with bruises and a bloody lip. When the other EMT stepped in, court papers say that Langston pulled out a can of pepper spray and began to spray the two victims in the face."We're thankful the assaulted FDNY EMTs involved in this incident are with us today. This could have ended tragically," said Oren Barzilay, president of Local 2507, the union that represents EMS workers. "Their efforts in preventing their ambulance from possibly being carjacked and causing substantial damage or injuries to others should not go unnoticed.
Police arrested the two men and they were both charged with felony assault.
