2 men hospitalized over firework injuries, as complaints surge across NYC

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two men were struck by fireworks as complaints about illegal fireworks displays across New York City surge.

According to police, a man in the Bronx was struck as he was watching a firework go off on University Avenue around 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday.

The victim was an 18- or 19-year-old man who officials say fell over after he was hit in the chest.

He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.A 33-year-old man attempting to shoot off a firework was injured on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn.

Authorities say just after 1:05 a.m., the firework hit the man after it shot out the back end, instead of the front.He was transported to Kings County Hospital in serious but stable condition.Officials say complaints to 311 have sored this month compared to last year with more than 1700 fireworks-related complaints happening the first 15 days of this month.

Last year, 311 received under 25 reports.NYPD encourages residents to report illegal firework shows said they are making arrests and issuing summonses with four injuries and at least eight arrests over the past few days.They also add that some of the fireworks are being mistakenly reported as gunfire.
