2-year-old boy, mom seriously injured in fiery head-on collision on Long Island

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A mother and her 2-year-old son were seriously injured when their vehicle collided with an SUV Wednesday evening on Long Island, officials said.

At approximately 6 p.m., the 29-year-old mom was in a Nissan sedan, heading east on Old Country Road, near Wisteria Avenue in Mineola, when she collided head-on with a Jeep Cherokee traveling in the opposite direction.


The mom and toddler were rushed to an area hospital. Both suffered extensive, traumatic injuries, officials said.

The driver of the SUV was a 28-year-old woman who only suffered only minor injuries.

There was a car fire as a result of the crash according to the Garden City Fire Department.

Officials said a 41-year-old man driving a Chevrolet being driven was also struck in the collision.

He suffered minor injuries. 

There was also a 35-year-old woman and two girls, ages six and three in the third vehicle authorities said.

No one else in that car was injured, police said.

An investigation to determine the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
