3 killed in multi-vehicle crash on Pa. Turnpike from New York: officials

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A multi-vehicle crash that occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Sunday, killed five people and injured 60 others officials confirm. 

The crash occurred at approximately 3:34 a.m. in the Mount Pleasant Township, about 35 miles from Pittsburgh and involved three tractor-trailers, a tour bus and a passenger car.   


The tour bus was headed to Cincinnati from New Jersey was traveling on a downhill grade when it failed to negotiate a corner, went up an embankment and rolled over, Pennsylvania State Police spokesman Stephen Limani told reporters.

A tractor trailer stuck two tractor-trailers that hit the overturned bus, Limani said.

A passenger cat was then involved in the pileup as well he said.

There was a FedEx and a UPS tractor trailer involved in the crash.

Around 60 people were taken to area hospitals and the five victims were found dead at the scene, according to county coroner Ken Bacha.

The Westmoreland County Coroner's Office later released the identities of the five people who were killed. Three of the five victims were from New York including Shuang Qing Feng, 58, a bus drvier from Flushing, Eileen Zelis Aria, 35 – a bus passenger from the Bronx and Jaremy Vazquez, 9, a bus passenger from Brooklyn.Pennsylvania State Police spokesman Stephen Limani told reporters that some of the people at the scene described a change in weather prior to the crash, including precipitation."We are so early in our investigation it's hard to pinpoint anything specific," Limani said.

Members of a National Transportation Safety Board team arrived at the crash site to begin an investigation that will focus on roadway design, driver performance, motor carrier compliance and survival factors, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy told reporters late Sunday.
