NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- At least five firefighters suffered injuries as they attempted to fight a four alarm blaze at a restaurant equipment warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The flames broke out at approximately 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning and FDNY members remain on the scene at 259 Monitor Street.
During a news conference early Thursday, Chief of Fire Operations Thomas Richardson said the fire began deep inside a restaurant supply warehouse at but even though the first fire units arrived on the scene within four minutes, the flames were initially difficult to access due to the multiple shelving units in the large warehouse .
Richardson added, that due to building issues and the firefighters' safety, units were moved outside, to attack the fire from the exterior, after just an hour working inside the warehouse.
The five firefighters that sustained minor injuries battling the blaze have been transported to area hospitals, EMS Chief Lillian Bonsignore said at the news conference, adding that they were lucky there weren't more serious injuries given the size of the fire.Officials were able to extinguish most of the visible fire by around 4 a.m. but units are still working on "pockets" of fire at the location.
