NEW YORK (1010 WINS) Eighty-four-year-old Alfred Cutting missed his bus to get to a doctor's appointment around 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

He tried to walk through a shortcut through a marshy area in Staten Island's Ocean Breeze Park and got stuck in the mud almost instantly.

Although most days he doesn't carry his cell phone, this time thankfully he was, and he called 9-1-1 repeatedly.

For an hour NYPD's Air Sea Rescue squad couldn't find him, but eventually, they were able to sync up with Cutting's phone so that he could hear the chopper overhead.

Officer John Martin described the rescue, his first, as, "Basically, what we train for every day here. Everything that we go out here around the base – training, scenarios. As a crew, we had a plan and we tackled it and we did our job."
