HEMPSTEAD (1010 WINS) – Several beaches in the Town of Hempstead were red-flagged Sunday after local fishermen caught a shark, officials on Long Island said.

The red-flag warning was posted at 12:15 p.m. and impacts East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates.

A red flag warns swimmers of severe hazards in the water.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran also said Nickerson Beach was open for waist-deep swimming only Sunday due to a shark sighting at nearby Atlantic Beach.

The shark catch comes after more than a dozen sightings at Long Island beaches earlier this month. The sightings forced a number of beaches to temporarily close.
