Boy, 10, dies after being struck by sanitation truck in Queens, mother remains critical

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 10-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a sanitation truck struck in Queens Tuesday morning, officials say.

The boy was walking with his mother when the truck hit them both as it was exiting the driveway.

The 40-year-old woman's leg was severed in the collision.

 The boy was later identified as Shree Panthee, of Queens. 

The 40-year-old driver of the city sanitation truck stayed at the scene.

No charges have been filed but the driver was suspended pending investigation, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.

"Heartbreaking news out of Queens," de Blasio tweeted.He added "we’ve lost a child after a crash involving a Sanitation vehicle. His mother is in stable condition. An investigation is underway. The driver has been suspended pending the results."

City councilmembers visited the crash site.

NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson tweeted "Absolutely devastating and more evidence that our streets are not safe. My deepest condolences and prayers to this family."

There was a vigil for Shree held Tuesday evening.
