Nearly 100K Brooklyn voters receive mislabeled absentee ballot envelopes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nearly 100,000 voters in Brooklyn received absentee ballots with the wrong names and addresses on the return envelopes, according to reports.

Voters in neighborhoods including Park Slope, Crown Heights, Bushwick and Sunset Park told Gothamist / WNYC they received absentee ballot envelopes with someone else’s name and address on them.

The New York City Board of Elections confirmed that some voters received the mislabeled envelopes, blaming it on an “outside vendor error.” A spokesperson for the board told CNN the envelope misprint affected 99,477 voters.

BOE Executive Director Michael Ryan on Tuesday said the vendor would mail out new ballots to those voters “to make certain that absolutely no disenfranchisement occurs in the borough of Brooklyn."

Voters who received the wrong envelope can also send a direct message to the BOE via Twitter, email the BOE at Apply4Absentee@boe.nyc or call 1-866-VOTE-NYC, the BOE tweeted.

Earlier this week, BOE voters in Queens who have never served in the military said they’d received absentee ballots labeled “Official Absentee Military Ballot,” leading to some confusion as to whether or not the ballots were valid.

The BOE said a typo caused the confusion — the ballots should have read “Official Absentee/Military Ballot” — and reassured voters the ballots with typos were still valid and would be counted.
