Cash for rape test kit initiatives leads to 1K arrests

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. announced the results of a $38 million rape kit testing initiative today.Money from a New York prosecutor and federal authorities were used for DNA testing from over 100,000 sexual assault cases around the country and the effort resulted in over 1,000 arrests and hundreds of convictions so far according to reports.

"I think for truly a celebratory moment, our investment has yielded the elimination or near elimination of rape kit backlogs in seven states." Vance stated.

According to Vance, more than 55,000 backlogged rape kits were sent to be analyzed.

Vance also called for legislative action and accountability in order to prevent future rape kit backlogs from going untested.
