NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Central Park field hospital will stop admitting new patients Monday as hospital admissions for coronavirus patients reach more manageable levels in New York City.Mount Sinai Health System and Samaritan's Purse announced it will take two weeks to treat the last patients, decontaminate and then remove the field hospital tents from Central Park."While this crisis is far from over, this marks a significant turning point in the coronavirus outbreak in New York that gives us assurance that we are returning towards normalcy," the statement read. "We are grateful to have fought the coronavirus together alongside the courageous people of New York City."
Samaritan's Purse Emergency Field Hospital was set up in Central Park's East Meadow, across the street from The Mount Sinai Hosptial with ICU units specializing in respiratory care for seriously ill patients with COVID-19.
The field hospital has treated 315 patients infected with the virus since April.
Over the next two weeks, the staff will also wind down their support of Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital.
