FORT WORTH — Jurors in the capital murder sentencing trial of former FedEx driver Tanner Horner heard graphic DNA testimony and accounts from two women alleging he raped them years earlier Tuesday in Tarrant County.
Forensic analyst Jacqueline Ferrara testified remotely that male DNA was detected on vaginal and anal swabs from 7-year-old Athena Strand’s sexual assault kit. Blood and semen were also found on several items of Horner’s clothing, including his FedEx work shirt. The testimony came on day six of the punishment phase, where the jury must decide whether Horner receives the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
Two women took the stand to describe sexual assaults by Horner when they were 16 years old in 2013 and 2014. One said she woke up to Horner raping her after drinking; the other described two incidents involving intoxication and lack of consent.
Horner, 31, pleaded guilty April 7 to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in the November 30, 2022 death of Athena Strand. He abducted the girl from her father’s home in Paradise, Wise County, while delivering a package. Her body was found two days later near Boyd. The case was moved from Wise County to Tarrant County because of pretrial publicity.
The high-profile case has drawn intense attention across North Texas since Athena’s disappearance more than three years ago, sparking community searches and renewed focus on child safety. Proceedings continue Wednesday in the 297th District Court.
