City DOE teaching assistants arrested in interstate drug, gun trafficking bust: sources

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Two city Education Department employees were among a group of people arrested in Brooklyn on Thursday for their role in an interstate drug and gun trafficking ring, law enforcement sources told 1010 WINS.

Five members of the Bully street gang were busted for allegedly transporting firearms and narcotics, including heroin, to New York City from Maine, the source said.

Among the allegations are that the group smuggled drugs, including fentanyl and K2, to inmates at Rikers Island. Sources said the drugs were found in the cells of inmates, including in the form of drug-soaked comic books and legal documents.

The group was also allegedly operating a money laundering location in a neighborhood of Brooklyn's 72nd Precinct.

The two Education Department employees arrested—a man and a woman—were teaching assistants, according to the sources.

The man was identified as a member of the gang, the sources said, while the woman was an "associate" who was dealing with the money laundering aspect of the operation.

The defendants were expected to appear in Brooklyn federal court Thursday.
