NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Environmentalists are warning that a proposed new ferry dock in Coney Island could ruin the natural ecosystem of the area.
The city is planning on building a landing dock in Coney Island Creek next to Kaiser Park, on the northern side of Coney Island, because it will protect the pier and boats from winds and rough waters.
But according to NY1, environmentalists that the sand dunes and seagrass of the area act as a natural storm barrier, and that dredging the creek could stir up toxins in the water.
"This is a tidal estuary meaning that with the tides, will be erosion that could potentially release these chemicals into the waterways," environmental activist and local resident Abby Jordan told NY1.
The ferry is set to launch in 2021. The ride would allow residents of the western part of Coney Island to arrive in Manhattan in 37 minutes, while the current bus and subway commute takes about 90 minutes.
The public comment period for the dock is open until Mar. 16.
