NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It's official: The United States has withdrawn from the World Health Organization, New Jersey's Sen. Bob Menendez announced Tuesday.

"Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the @WHO in the midst of a pandemic," Menendez tweeted. "To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn't do it justice. This won't protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone."

Trump in May announced that the U.S. would end its relationship with WHO over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

He also accused the organization of being a puppet of China.

At the time, Trump said, "China has total control over the World Health Organization despite only paying $40 million per year compared to what the United States has been paying which is approximately $450 million a year."
