People familiar with the investigation told the New York Times that McGregor, one of the world's highest paid athletes, was accused in December.
McGregor was arrested in January, the newspaper reports. He was questioned, and released without charges, sources told the Times.
The fighter announced his retirement from the UFC on Tuesday.
The alleged victim says the attack took place at the Beacon Hotel in a business park on the edge of Dublin. McGregor has occasionally booked the hotel's sole penthouse room, and most recently visited in December, a source told the Times.
McGregor and the UFC have not commented on the allegations.
