NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — City Council Speaker Corey Johnson says he's disturbed by reports that the NYPD has been cracking down on cyclists rather than drivers in the wake of the death of a 20-year-old bike messenger in Chelsea on Monday.
Johnson was made aware of reports that the NYPD was ticketing cyclists for running red lights, riding outside bike lanes and failing to yield to pedestrians half a block from the site of the fatal accident.

"It is totally insane and unacceptable that in the wake of this cyclist fatality, the response is to ticket cyclists," Johnson said.
Johnson says enforcement efforts should be directed at trucks and cars.
Friends of Robyn Hightmna, the biker who was killed when hit by a truck, are planning a ghost bike ride in her honor to raise awareness about bicycling fatalities.
They're going to paint her bike white and tow it to the scene of her death, 6th Avenue and 24th Street.
