HARTFORD, C.T. (1010 WINS) -- Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont on Wednesday reported 85 new COVID-19 deaths and 374 new positive cases, before releasing a tentative plan for the "gradual reopening" of higher education campuses.
A total of 30,995 Connecticut residents have tested positive for COVID-19, and 2,718 have died, Lamont said Wednesday.
Hospitalizations increased between Monday and Tuesday, but dropped by 55 between Tuesday and Wednesday, to 1,445, according to Lamont.
"What we saw (on Tuesday), I hope, was just a one-day blip," he said.
Lamont on Tuesday announced that K-12 schools would remain closed for the rest of the academic year. On Wednesday, he said the Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group's education committee had devised a tentative plan to gradually reopen higher education campuses.
Under the proposed plan, research programs would be able to start reopening on May 20; "nonresidential workforce and degree completion programs" would begin reopening at the beginning of June; graduate programs and "undergraduate residential small-scale pilot programs" would reopen in July and August; and undergraduate residential programs and boarding schools would reopen Sept. 1.
The reopenings would happen "at the discretion of each institution and depending on health conditions," he noted.
