TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Tuesday reported 2,495 new COVID-19 cases and 334 new fatalities — more than half of which have been linked to long-term care facilities.

A total of 130,593 state residents have now tested positive for COVID-19 and 8,244 have died, Murphy said during his daily briefing, noting that the numbers could increase later this week due to "some lagging results from the weekend that we have yet to receive."

The number of long-term care facilities reporting cases of COVID-19, as well as the number of cases in those facilities, continue to increase, according to Murphy.

Five hundred and nine long-term care facilities in the state have reported a total of 22,602 positive COVID-19 cases, Murphy said. Of the 8,244 COVID-19 deaths the state reported Tuesday, 4,151 happened in long-term care facilities, he added.

"Roughly about half of all of our COVID-19 deaths statewide have been of individuals who have been within the long-term care system," Murphy said. "Just as tragically we have seen some in the industry be slow to respond and adapt to the emergent threat of COVID-19, and we intend to hold folks accountable as we should and as you would want us to."

As of 10 p.m. on Monday, 5,328 patients in the state were hospitalized with COVID-19 — a "small increase" from Sunday, but a decrease of nearly 3,000 over the past three weeks, Murphy said.

The number of patients in either critical or intensive care dropped to 1,534, Murphy said, adding that that number has been declining for a week.

On Monday, 385 people were admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 treatment and 232 patients were discharged, he said.
