CORONAVIRUS ON LI: Nassau total jumps 15 to 293, 3rd death reported

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced on Thursday the county's third coronavirus death, a 76-year-old woman from Hempstead. She also confirmed that there are 15 more positive cases, bringing the countywide total to 293.

Curran also announced that the county will be launching a testing app that would send coronavirus related alerts right to people's phone .

The app is a response to a 49 percent surge in year to date scam calls in Nassau County that have targeted seniors that might be dealing with fear over coronavirus concerns.

Nassau County residents can receive coronavirus related alerts by simply texting COVID19NC to 888777, according to Curran.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said officials are investigating several complaints made by seniors that have reported calls where they are asked for their personal information including credit card, insurance and bank information.

"Don't even answer unless you know the number calling," Ryder suggested.
