BOSTON (1010 WINS) -- Retired Red Sox Hall of Famer David Ortiz threw out the first pitch before the Red Sox-Yankees game Monday afternoon -- his first public appearance since being shot in the back three months ago in the Dominican Republic.
Ortiz was introduced as "one of the most beloved people" in the history of Boston.
He threw the first pitch to former teammate Jason Varitek.
"I want to thank God for giving me a second opportunity to be here with all of you," Ortiz told the crowd. "Thank you very much Red Sox family."
Ortiz was shot June 9 and was rushed into surgery in the Dominican before being flown to Boston. He was moved out of intensive care on June 22, but remained at Massachusetts General Hospital until his release on July 26.
Police in the Dominican said Ortiz was not the intended target of the shooting.
