NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- So is Mayor Bill de Blasio joining the ever-growing group of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president?

After all, the rumors that he will indeed run have been swirling around for months.

Well, he'll make the announcement -- whether he's running or not -- any day now, he said at a press conference Thursday.

He said the announcement will come "in the month of May."

"It's a personal decision, always, in the end," he said. "But it's natural to take into account other factors."

He added, "I have never run for anything without intending to win. And you can look at my track record — I was a underdog in everything I've ever been near."

De Blasio has made several trips to early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire to promote his record on police reform, early childhood education and other issues. He said his political action committee, Fairness PAC, has been conducting polling in Iowa.

Currently, there are 21 candidates vying for the Democratic ticket -- and according to one recent poll, New Yorkers aren't eager to see him run: Seventy-six of New York City voters said he should not seek the White House in a Quinnipiac University poll published last month.
