NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- During his briefing on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio called the chokehold incident that occurred over the weekend in Queens "disturbing" and commended Commissioner Dermot Shea on taking fast action to suspend the officer involved.
The Mayor also praised the second officer who stepped in and stopped the officer from continuing the apparent chokehold.
"We need every officer to take responsibility when they see another officer do something wrong," de Blasio said.
He also addressed the uptick in shootings across the city saying he's "very very very concerned."
De Blasio announced that the NYPD will be starting the "Summer All Out" program with hundreds of additional officers in 20 key precincts and commands experiencing gun violence.
The mayor explained that there will be increased car and foot patrols in the areas that have seen an increase in shootings.
The NYPD will also work with community residents to do anti-violence work.
"We are not going to allow gun violence to continue to grow. We're going to do whatever it takes to fight back," de Blasio said, emphasizing that these new reforms will work to being fair and better the relationship between police and the community.
