De Blasio unveils a nearly $9 million plan of anti-violence and community initiatives for Brownsville

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday night headed to Brownsville -- the site of last month's shooting at a playground during the Old Timers Day event -- to announce a boost in funding to support anti-violence and other community initiatives in the Brooklyn neighborhood.

Flanked by city hall and NYPD officials, the mayor-turned-Democratic presidential candidate, announced to a crowd of locals, an $8.6 million plan that's in response to the shooting, which left one dead and several others injured. 


"We are going to do something to make a difference," de Blasio told the crowd. "We are announcing today the creation of a brand new community center to serve our young people to serve all of our residents."

He said the city will give the community's young people something to be positive about. 

"We're going to work together," de Blasio said. 

As part of this plan, the Mayor's Office to Prevent Gun Violence and the Mayor's Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP) will expand its services. 

Also, more than $5 million will go towards renovating the Brownsville Houses Community Center. 

There will also be added NYPD security cameras and public lighting around the Brownsville Playground.

Funding will also go towards Brownsville Neighborhood YouthStat, which trains youth in a variety of community-building skills. 

The Brownsville Recreation Center will also hire an additional 12 staffers. 

"We are dedicated to making New York City safer and safer," de Blasio tweeted. "These investments in Brownsville will help end gun violence and provide more services to the community."
